Understanding depression

Picture yourself in a deep swimming pool with a large, fully inflated beach ball. Further, assuming you are a good swimmer, picture yourself taking that ball to the bottom of the pool and holding it there. [My counselor friend] said this is a picture of depression. It takes all your energy to hold that ball in place. You can do little else. Similarly with depression, you are holding anger — which can be a powerful force — at a deep level even while being unconscious of this expenditure of energy. When deeply depressed, a person finds it a chore to even get out of bed in the morning.
